John's story
I have had a life long interest in blacksmithing which was sparked into action by the late Frank Dean whose seventy years of blacksmithing experience ignited my passion.
Hand forging anything of quality in wrought iron I am equally happy forging delicate jewellery pieces or chunky, heavy structural work in traditional or contemporary style. My work ranges from executing new designs, copying works originally made by blacksmiths of old, and conserving and renovating original period pieces.
As a designer-maker I enjoy working with clients to assist formulating their ideas or applying the techniques of blacksmithing to my own original designs.
My study of traditional forge work led me to undertake an apprenticeship with the Countryside Agency for which I was awarded a Certificate of Merit endorsed by the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths. It was natural progression of continual advancement within the craft to apply to the Worshipful Company for a Diploma of Merit. For this I had to prove my blacksmithing skills over several years and to demonstrate competence in making different types of articles involving many techniques. I was delighted to be accepted as an Associate Member of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths (AWCB).
I love undertaking public demonstrations of the art of blacksmithing to bring awareness of the traditional skills to those who have never seen a blacksmith at work. Children and adults alike are thrilled to see snails being forged in front of them! I also enjoy sharing my skills through the blacksmithing courses I run here in the forge.
